Daily Witchy Practices to Align with September’s Energies

An Introduction to September's Energies

As summer fades and the leaves begin to change, September ushers in a period of transition and transformation. This month, named after the Latin word 'septem', meaning seven, was originally the seventh month in the ancient Roman calendar. Now, as the ninth month in our modern calendar, September holds a unique blend of energies. It is a time of grounding and preparing, of turning inwards and reflecting on past while setting intentions for the future.

The Autumn Equinox, also known as Mabon in the Witch’s Wheel of the Year, occurs in September, marking the balance between day and night, light and dark, inner and outer worlds. This is a powerful time for witches and spiritual practitioners to align their practices with the energies of the season, seeking balance, harmony, and gratitude in their daily rituals. In this post, I'd like to share a few daily witchy practices that you can incorporate into your routine to align with September's energies. These practices are intended to help you connect more deeply with your inner wisdom, the rhythms of nature, and the magic of the changing seasons.

Honoring the Harvest

September is traditionally a time of harvest, when we reap what we have sown throughout the year. This is a time to honor the abundance in our lives and express gratitude for the blessings we have received. One way to do this is through a daily gratitude practice. Each morning, take a moment to write down three things you are grateful for. This simple act can help you start your day with a sense of appreciation and abundance.

Another way to honor the harvest is by incorporating seasonal foods into your diet. Apples, pumpkins, squash, and root vegetables are all in season in September. These foods are grounding and nourishing, perfect for preparing the body for the colder months ahead. You might also consider preparing a special meal or offering to honor the harvest, using locally-sourced ingredients where possible.

You could also create a harvest altar in your home or sacred space. This could include symbols of the harvest, such as grains, fruit, or autumn leaves, as well as symbols of what you have harvested in your own life this year. This could be a physical representation, such as a photograph or memento, or it could be a written note or affirmation of something you have achieved or learned.

Embracing Balance

The Autumn Equinox is a time of balance, when day and night are equal in length. This balance between light and dark can be a powerful metaphor for our own lives, inviting us to find harmony between our active, outward-focused energies and our passive, inward-focused energies.

One way to embrace this balance is through a daily meditation practice. Each day, take a few moments to sit quietly and focus on your breath. As you breathe in, imagine drawing in light, energy, and activity. As you breathe out, imagine releasing darkness, rest, and passivity. This simple breathing meditation can help you find a sense of balance and harmony within yourself.

Another practice to embrace balance is through yoga or movement. Poses that focus on balance, such as tree pose or warrior III, can be particularly effective during this time. As you move through these poses, focus on the concept of balance, both physically and metaphorically.

Preparing for the Dark

As the days begin to shorten and the nights grow longer, September is also a time to prepare for the darker half of the year. This is a time to turn inward, to reflect on the past and set intentions for the future. A daily journaling practice can be a powerful tool for this inward journey. Each night, take a few moments to write in your journal. Reflect on your day, your feelings, and your experiences. What did you learn today? What do you want to remember? What do you want to let go of? You might also consider a daily divination practice, such as tarot or runes. These tools can provide insight into your subconscious mind and help you navigate the darker months ahead. Draw a card or rune each day and reflect on its meaning and how it relates to your life.

Finally, consider setting an intention for the darker half of the year. This could be a goal, a wish, or a theme that you want to explore in the coming months. Write this intention down and place it somewhere you will see it every day, as a reminder of your purpose and direction. September is a beautiful and powerful month, filled with the energies of harvest, balance, and preparation. By incorporating these daily witchy practices into your routine, you can align yourself with these energies and make the most of this magical time of year. Remember, the most important thing is to find practices that resonate with you and feel meaningful to you.

Happy September, witches!
